Periyar Tiger Reserve

Periyar Tiger Reserve is the God's gift to God's own country. Situated in Thekkady near the Kerala-Tamilnadu border town Kumily,the Periyar Tiger Reserve is a perfect blend of scenic beauty and biodiversity.This sanctuary has a reputation for its deep dense evergreen forests, semi-evergreen and savanna grass lands. The forest is home to some of the rare species of sambars, long-tailed Macaques, Gaurs, Nilgiri Langurs, herds of elephants, and tigers.
The Periyar Wildlife sanctuary spreads across 925.54 Sq km, of which 360 km² (139 sq. miles) is thick evergreen forest. The Periyar Wild Life Sanctuary was declared a Tiger Reserve in 1978.
The splendid artificial lake formed by the Mullaperiyar Dam across the Periyar River adds to the charm of the park. The greatest attraction of Periyar are the herds of wild elephants that come down to play in the lake. Boating in Periyar lake is a memorable experience for any tourist.This is the only sanctuary in India where you can have the unique experience of viewing wildlife at close quarters from the safety of a boat on the lake.
